Waterbury Fire Department

Two Alarm Multi Structure Fire Bishop St 10/09/09

For the second time in 12 hours Waterbury Fire Department would battle a vacant multi family structure which would threaten the surrounding structures. Sometime after midnight a fire broke out in a vacant 3 story multiple dwelling in the 200 block of Bishop St in Waterbury's north end. First arriving companies observed a well involved large wood frame structure which easily threatened to involve the houses on either side of it. Fire fighters cleared the 2 adjacent occupied structures and then went to work on a defensive attack of the fire building. The home on the B side also became involved with fire in the attic and roof and fire on the D side which faced the origin building. The fire in the exposed building was brought under control quickly and firefighters took up a position on the roof to attack the main fire. Crews would work for several hours to try and douse the heavy fire seated in the attic space on the third floor. They had at least five 2 & 1/2 inch ground lines and Truck 3's ladder mounted monitor working and the City's tower ladder Truck 2 was also put into service to try and get a better attack angle on the remaining fire. Crews would remain on scene until almost 7:30am before all hot spots were extinguished. Several families were displaced from the secondary exposure building. The fire marshal's office was on scene and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
